Lady Gaga (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, Manhattan, New York City) is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. She is a very talented singer and because of her vocal abilities she won two Grammy awards.
Lady Gaga discovered her passion for music at an early age, probably inspired by her father Joseph Germanotta, an Italian American internet entrepreneur. When she was a child her idols were Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, David Bowie and Queen. The influence of Queen in Lady Gaga's live was so powerful that she nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga”. She declared on numerous occasions that she always loved rock and pop. As a child she was interested in playing the piano. Lady Gaga is the girl who at age of 4 learned to play the piano by ear. At the age of 13 years old, she even wrote her first piano ballad.
Lady Gaga's first record contract was at the age of 19, but she began her success when she signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. At first she worked as a songwriter for Interscope. She wrote songs for Britney Spears, Fergie and Pussycat Dolls. Gaga's potential caught the attention of Akon, who signed her to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.
Her debut album, The Fame, was released on August 19, 2008. This album was well received by critics and it also had a great commercial success, reaching number one in the UK, Canada, Austria, Germany and Ireland. It was very close to the top also in the United States, but it peaked at two. Its first two singles, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face", were well received by the public and became number-one hits in many countries, among which was also the United States.
Lady Gaga released her second album, The Fame Monster, on November 18, 2009. This album deals with the darker side of fame, as you can see from the "monster" metaphor. "Bad Romance" was released as the album's first single, and it reached the top in many countries. In the United States it peaked at two. The next two singles released were "Telephone”, which features the famous R&B singer Beyoncé , and "Alejandro".
With only these two albums, as of May 2010, Lady Gaga was so successful that she has sold over 15 million albums and over 40 million singles worldwide.
