Johnny Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on the 9-th of June 1963. His family moved about 20 times around the country before settling down in Florida in the 1970’s.His father was a civil engineer and his mother Betty Palmer was a waitress.
As he recalls he had a troubled childhood and engaged in self-harm when he was little. He has several scars reminiscent of that time. As a teenager Depp was a reclusive and lonesome boy and thought that he had no talent all up until his mother bought him a guitar. He played in various bands and even dropped out of school in 1979 to try to become a rock musician.
He reconsidered his decision but the school principal convinced him not to return and to follow his dream. He played in the band Six Gun Method and Rock City Angels. He got married in 1983 with Anne Allison. Because of financial troubles he had to take up a job as a ballpoint salesman. His big brake came when he met actor Nicolas Cage in Los Angeles and convinced him to take on an acting career.
His first role was in the movie „Nightmare on Elm Street”. He furthered his succes in Fox’s Network crime drama 21 Jump Street and became somesort of a teen idol. He did not like this situationa as he felt he was transformed in nothing more than an object. Afterwards he only played parts that he felt were „interesting”.
Edward Scissorhands was one of such examples of Johnny Depp taking control of his career. He also played in Ed Wood (1994), Donnie Brasco (1997), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Public Enemies (2009) and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Depp has a long standing collaboration and friednship with producer Tim Burton.
Depp was made the godfather of one of Burton’s children. Some of his future projects include the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean, Dark Shadows and The Lone Ranger. Regarding his romantic life after his divorce of Anne Allison in 1985, he dated Sherilyn Fenn and Kate Moss. Today he is in a relationship with french actress Vanessa Paradis with whom he has two children.
