Gillian Leigh Anderson was born on August 9, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois. She is an actress famous for her role as Special Agent Dana Scully in the television series "The X-Files".
Gillian Anderson's mother, Rosemary Anderson, is a computer analyst. Her father, Edward Anderson, owned a film post-production company. She also has a younger brother, Aaron who suffers from neurofibromatosis, and a younger sister, Zoe. After her birth, her family relocated to Puerto Rico for 15 months and then moved to England because her father wanted to attend the London Film School. When she was 11, her family moved back to America in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Because Gillian Anderson spent a lot of her childhood in England, she has an English accent. When she returned to America she was mocked because of her English accent and soon she adopted a Midwest accent. Today, depending on her location she can speak with an American or an English accent. As a child she wanted to be an archeologist or a marine biologist, but she soon changed her mind and she was sure that she wanted to be an actress.
Gillian Anderson began her acting career in high school productions, and later in Community Theater. She later obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago. Gillian Anderson moved to New York when she was 20 years old, to start her acting career. After 4 years with many auditions and some roles in TV she was eventually cast as Special Agent Dana Scully, an independent and intelligent woman, in the show "The X-Files", a science fiction television series. The other main character in this show is Fox Mulder played by David Duchovny. For her performance in this show, Gillian Anderson won several awards, including an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe.
